What is Oysho?

Oysho is a womenswear brand owned by Inditex, the Spanish group behind Zara. It began as a lingerie and loungewear chain and today describes itself first as a sports and leisure brand, selling activewear for yoga, training, running and outdoor activities alongside underwear, swimwear and sleepwear. Its headquarters are in Tordera, in the province of Barcelona.

History

Inditex launched Oysho in 2001 as part of its strategy of diversifying beyond Zara into new categories. The brand opened its online store in 2011. Over the following decade it gradually expanded its sportswear offer until activewear became its main focus. In September 2022 it launched the Oysho Training app, and in September 2024 it opened its largest store, at Jockey Plaza in Lima.

Products and positioning

The range spans activewear, lingerie, loungewear, swimwear and accessories, with prices in the mid-market. This places Oysho in competition with specialist activewear brands as well as with lingerie and swimwear retailers. Its largest markets are Spain, followed by Mexico and Turkey.

Business model and distribution

Oysho stores average around 450 square metres of selling space. Wikipedia lists 457 locations for 2023, while Inditex's brand table shows close to 400 stores, reflecting the group's policy of consolidating into fewer, larger shops. Distribution includes:

  • Own stores in more than 50 countries.
  • Franchised stores in selected markets.
  • E-commerce since 2011, supported by Inditex's integrated stock management.

Oysho and technology

In September 2022 the brand launched the Oysho Training app, which offers fitness, yoga, Pilates and running programmes in six languages. The app extends the brand from product sales into digital content and community around exercise.

Why it matters

Oysho is a case study in how a fast fashion group can reposition a brand into a fast-growing category. Its shift from lingerie to activewear mirrors the wider growth of athleisure and shows how Inditex uses its supply chain to compete with specialist sportswear brands.
