What is Snapper Rock?
Snapper Rock is a sun protective swimwear brand with roots in New Zealand and a base in Annapolis, Maryland. Founder and CEO Liz Eglinton started the business in 2003 after the founders moved from New Zealand to Annapolis, one of America's best known sailing towns.
History
The brand began by dressing junior sailors and soon widened into sun protection for children aged 0 to 16. Key milestones include:
- 2016: launch of an adult line with matching prints for fathers and women's silhouettes
- 2020: introduction of recycled fibres such as REPREVE
- 2022: launch of eco friendly outerwear
Products and positioning
All Snapper Rock swimwear is rated UPF50+, blocking 98 percent of UVA and UVB rays through the fabric weave rather than chemicals. The fabrics, designed and tested in New Zealand, are lightweight, breathable and quick drying. The range covers swimwear for babies, children, teens and adults, matching family swimsuits, hats, sunglasses, swim bags, waterproof jewellery and resort cover ups.
Distribution
The brand sells through its own US web shop and runs a wholesale programme. It has exhibited at the Pitti Bimbo children's fashion fair in Florence and is stocked by retailers such as Maisonette.
Why it matters
Snapper Rock shows how a functional promise, sun safety for children, can be extended into family dressing and recycled materials.
