What is Tostmann?
Tostmann, trading as Tostmann Trachten, is an Austrian maker of traditional costume, or Tracht. It was founded in 1949 by Marlene and Jochen Tostmann in Seewalchen am Attersee, in the Salzkammergut region of Upper Austria, and is known for more than seventy-five years of dirndl tradition.
History
The company started with a manual loom and an old Singer sewing machine. Within about a decade it had grown into a substantial workshop, producing roughly 4,000 dirndls a month with 200 female employees.
Products and positioning
Tostmann specialises in dirndl dresses and other traditional garments, along with hand-woven items. Most pieces are made from Austrian fabrics. Customers wear them for occasions such as weddings, festivals and other celebrations, as well as for everyday life in the Austrian countryside.
Distribution
The brand sells through its own shops, which hold its largest collections:
- Seewalchen am Attersee, at the original site, where guided visits of the atelier are possible
- Vienna, its city store
Why it matters
Tostmann is one of the reference names for Austrian Tracht, keeping regional craft, weaving and dressmaking alive while serving a market in which traditional dress remains part of contemporary fashion.
