What is TRISTAN?
TRISTAN is a Montreal fashion brand that designs and sells its own ready-to-wear for women and men. Its collections centre on clothing for work and evenings out, including blazers and suiting, with some casual weekend pieces and accessories.
History
Gilles Fortin and Denise Deslauriers opened Tristan and Iseut, a multi-brand women's store in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, in 1973, followed by a men's store in 1974. By the late 1970s they sold only in-house designs. The company moved its head office to the Lachine Canal in Montreal in 1996, operated stores in the New York area during the 1990s and unified all its shops under the TRISTAN name in 2007. The second generation of the Fortin family now runs the business.
Products and positioning
Denise Deslauriers has overseen design and production. A significant share of products has been made in Canada, in factories in Farnham and Cookshire, and the brand highlights a Made in Canada selection.
Distribution
TRISTAN sells through its own stores, mainly in Quebec with others in Ontario and Alberta, an e-commerce site in English and French, and a franchise model that took the brand to Santiago, Chile.
Why it matters
TRISTAN is one of Quebec's long-standing vertically integrated fashion retailers, designing, partly producing and selling its own collections.
