What is Vulcain?
Vulcain is a Swiss watch brand based in Le Locle, in the Neuchâtel watchmaking region, with roots going back to 1858. Its name is closely linked to the Cricket, one of the best-known mechanical alarm wristwatches.
History
The Cricket was introduced in 1947, under owner Robert Ditisheim, after about five years of development. Its movement used two independent barrels, one for timekeeping and one for the alarm, and produced a loud chime. Presidents Truman, Eisenhower, Johnson and Nixon wore the watch, giving it the nickname watch of the presidents. Later models included the Golden Voice for women in 1958 and the Nautical, with an alarm audible underwater, in 1961.
The quartz crisis led to a halt in production in the early 1980s. In 2001 Production et Marketing Horloger SA acquired the brand and the Cricket calibre rights, and the Cricket returned in 2002.
