Alpha was incorporated in 1959 in Knoxville, Tennessee, by Samuel Gelber. That year it won its first US Department of Defense contracts for Air Force N-3B parkas and Navy shipboard shirts. In 1963 it received its first contracts for the MA-1 flight jacket and N-2B parka, and in 1965 for the Army's M-65 field coat, beginning 25 years of government work on that jacket.
After Gelber died in 1982, his son-in-law Alan Cirker took over, expanded the commercial business and trademarked the three-bar logo. Fashion Network reported in 2016 that Mike Cirker had led the company since 2011.
