What is Butter Goods?

Butter Goods is a skate-rooted clothing brand from Australia. The brand's web store defaults to Australia and currently features core denim, boardshorts, webstore exclusives and collaborations with Sun Ra and Umbro.

History

Co-founder Garth Mariano has said that he and Matt Evans started Butter in 2008. They were friends from high school who grew up skating together, and the Skateboarders Journal places the brand in Perth, Western Australia. HHV Journal reports that the pair decided they were not skilled enough to be sponsored, so they made their own clothing, having earlier produced VHS skate videos with their crew. Both had studied graphic design.

The label began with screen-printed T-shirts and later expanded into a team, videos and collaborations, including a DC collection of garments and a shoe colourway.

Products and distribution

HHV Journal reports that the brand gained international attention in Europe, the US and Japan. A partnership with German footwear company Puma produced tracksuits, crewnecks, shirts, a polo and shorts, and two shoes: the Puma Slipstream and Basket, with a retro-inspired design drawing on classic skate videos. The collection was sold through retailers including HHV.

Why it matters

Butter Goods is a notable example of an Australian skate label that gained a global following through collaborations and independent retail. Sources reviewed do not state its ownership, so none is given.
