What is MARCS?
MARCS is an Australian apparel brand for men and women, founded by Mark Keighery. It celebrated its 40th anniversary in February 2019 with an event at Bondi Icebergs in Sydney.
History
MARCS was long run alongside sister brand David Lawrence under M. Webster Holdings. In February 2017 both brands entered administration, and administrators closed a number of stores in Australia and New Zealand. In April 2017 department store group Myer acquired the brand names, intellectual property and existing inventory of MARCS and David Lawrence, without taking on store leases.
Products and positioning
- Men's and women's casual wear
- Smart casual clothing and workwear
- Accessories
- Capsule ranges, including a Liberty print line and a knitwear collaboration with John Macarthur
Distribution
Under Myer ownership MARCS is sold through Myer and through its own website, and is also available on online marketplaces such as The Iconic.
Why it matters
MARCS illustrates a common path for established Australian fashion brands after administration: acquisition by a department store that keeps the brand name and intellectual property and shifts distribution from standalone stores towards concessions and online.
