What is State of Art?
State of Art is a family owned Dutch menswear brand headquartered in Lichtenvoorde, in and around the former knitting factory where the business began. It describes itself as driven by craftsmanship, with values of drive, loyalty and craftsmanship.
History
The company's roots go back to 1936, when Albert Westerman Sr. set up a knitwear factory in Lichtenvoorde making baby clothes. In the 1960s the factory moved into private label production. In 1987 Albert Westerman Jr. and retail specialist Hans Kuijf launched State of Art, presenting a first knitwear collection at the MODAM fair in Amsterdam.
The first own store opened in Knokke, Belgium, in 2004, followed by the first Dutch stores in Utrecht and Breda in 2007. In 2013 the company shifted to direct to consumer sales, and in 2024 it opened a new flagship in Antwerp.
