What is Promod?

Promod is a French ready to wear brand for women, headquartered in Marcq-en-Barœul in the Lille area. It sells clothing and accessories in the accessible mid market and has long been one of the familiar womenswear names in French shopping streets and malls.

History

Promod was founded in 1975 by Francis-Charles Pollet, one of the heirs of the founder of the mail order company La Redoute, where he spent the first part of his career. The brand operated only in France and Belgium until 1990, then opened a subsidiary in Spain, followed by subsidiaries in major EU countries and Central Europe, and later partnership stores in the Middle East and Russia. Leadership passed in time to his son Julien Pollet.

From the mid 2010s the company retrenched. It cut jobs in 2016 because of weaker profitability abroad, and a 2019 transformation plan reduced the range by about 20%, along with stock and store numbers. Trade press reported closures in Spain and Germany, where the subsidiary entered insolvency proceedings. In 2022 Promod had 418 stores, 380 of them in France.

Products and positioning

Promod offers womenswear and accessories with a feminine, easy to wear style. Julien Pollet has described the strategy as produire moins mais mieux, producing less but better, and the company has experimented with:

  • Knitwear made in France, including an organic wool sweater
  • Capsule collections such as Italian prints
  • A concept store combining second hand, unsold stock and sewing workshops
  • Couture kits after acquiring two DIY businesses

Business model and distribution

Promod combines directly operated stores with distribution partnerships, which began in 1999, and online sales. It was an early mover in French fashion e-commerce with promod.fr in 1996, and it launched a new online store in 2023. Its international reach today relies largely on partners rather than its own subsidiaries.

Why it matters

Promod illustrates the pressure on French mid market womenswear chains, many of which have closed. Its family ownership, smaller footprint and focus on fewer, better products show one route to survival in that segment.
